What Can I Invest Into In 2024 And 2025?

It’s a fairly common question out there asked by people who have a spare bit of cash and want to grow it into something meaningful. It’s also changing all the time and a question I ask myself on a regular basis.
Most people have heard of the stock market but even within this market there are a variety of different types of investments with their own risk/reward ratio. Here’s just a few of them:
Shares
Bonds
ETF’s (Exchange Traded Funds)
CFD’s Contract For Differences
Forex (Foreign Exchange)
But the stock market isn’t the only place where you can invest and this is what catches people out. They think they’ve spread their risk because they have diversified in a range of products within the stock market but they haven’t. Let’s dive into some of these in more detail.
Commodities
At a high level, commodities are the stuff we use everyday and are traded all around the world. This could be soybeans, pork bellies, gold, silver, oil. It’s the building blocks of our society. Fortunes can be made and lost on trading commodities
Cryptocurrencies
Believe it or not but some cryptocurrencies have been around for over 10 years. Some of the hype they get, you’d think they were invented last week. Although, at the pace of development, some of them might have. Essentially the majority of cryptocurrencies provide mathematical methods of verifying transactions which are very difficult to tamper with. The value is in the underlying technology and what it can be purposed for.
Cash
People often forget that cash can be an investment as well as your safety net. In today’s inflationary world you can get bank accounts which pay out over 5%. Do you remember the last time in recent history you had a bank account paying out 5% interest? You also have the option of investing in fixed term deposits which effectively lock up your money for a period of time with the promise of paying out a higher interest rate. At the time of writing ING were offering an interest rate of 5.3% if you locked your money away for 12 months.
Property
This probably doesn’t need explanation given the Auzzy obsession with property. Still worth a mention that there are potential deals to be had to those who want to put the time and effort into the research
Art
This is a bit of a more unusual bucket of investment and could be classed as highly speculative (e.g. I believe XYZ items will go up in value over time based on the popularity it will have in the future). There’s a whole range of types of Art you can invest in from the physical to the digital and the prices of these items range wildly. This again falls into the category of putting the time and the effort into the research and not believing the nice salesperson behind the piece.
Investments not on the typical high street
These are typically investments that you would need some kind of qualifying criteria for (e.g. net worth of X, being part of an Angel investment group or a minimum investment amount etc). They’re promises are big but so are the risks. An example company (not an endorsement) that I’ve come across in the past is the beaufort society.
Yourself
Yourself? Yup. Picking up new skills and taking the time on developing yourself can pay significant dividends in your lifetime.
To quote the late Entrepreneur Jim Rohn: If you work on your job, you'll make a living. If you work on yourself, you'll make a fortune.”
